Black spot, also known as Diplocarpon Rosae, can be a common challenge when growing roses. It is a fungal disease that results in black spots showing up on lower rose leaves, and working their way up resulting in the leaves yellowing and falling off. With this loss of the roses leaves, the rose plant can have a harder time photosynthesizing food, is more prone to stressors and can experience inhibited overall health and bloom production. Black spot fungal spores thrive in wet, humid conditions so to combat this it is important to make sure the roses are getting plenty of sun, air circulation through not crowding each other, and a watering system focused on hydrating roots, rather than getting leaves wet. Prevention is also an important step when combatting Black spot trouble. This could look like: Cleaning gardening tools with alcohol after pruning black spot leaves, putting down a non wetness prone mulch over the beds as well as spraying the leaves with store bought fungicidal spray or other homemade remedies. Although black spot is a challenge that impacts how the rose looks aesthetically, this disease is not good for the health of the rose.

To the west of the Richmond Rose Garden lies the formal E.G. Hill Memorial Rose Garden, a site of historical and botanical significance. Dedicated in 1937, this garden honors the legacy of Edward Gurney Hill, founder of the Hills Rose companies and is maintained by the Richmond Parks and Recreation Department. Adjacent to the garden is the historic Charles House, another testament to Richmond’s rich history. Despite their proximity, many visitors and locals find it challenging to distinguish between the two gardens, as one is maintained by city funding and the other by volunteers and donations.

The Importance of the E.G. Hill Fountain

In recent years, the fountain located in the E.G. Hill Memorial Rose Garden has not been operational due to various issues, including water leaks. This has led to a lessened experience for garden-goers who expect to enjoy the full beauty of the area. The repair of this fountain is crucial, not just for aesthetic reasons but also for preserving the integrity and allure of the garden.

Funding the Fountain Repair

The total cost of repairing the fountain is estimated at $164,000. This includes restoration of the fountain to its original condition. To assist this effort, the Richmond Parks and Recreation Department has secured a $50,000 state match. In a gesture of community spirit and dedication to enhancing the visitor experience, the Richmond Rose Garden has pledged a $10,000 donation. Thanks to the state’s matching funds, this contribution will be effectively doubled.

A Shared Vision for the Gardens

The Richmond Rose Garden board is committed to collaborating with the Parks Department. Their shared goal is to ensure the fountain’s restoration, enhancing the garden’s charm and visitor satisfaction. A recent Google review underscores the significance of this effort: “The rose garden is a pleasure to stroll through… To our disappointment, the fountain was not working on our visit but I’m sure it’s beautiful.”

For many visitors, the Richmond Rose Garden and the E.G. Hill Memorial Rose Garden are viewed as a unified experience. While they operate independently, there is a strong belief in the importance of partnership to achieve common goals. By helping to repair the fountain, the Richmond Rose Garden board hopes to enrich the garden experience for all who visit, inviting them to “stop and smell the roses” with the added delight of a restored fountain in view.

Pruning your rose bush is essential to ensure its health and beauty. By removing dead, diseased, or dying canes, you not only promote healthy growth but also enhance airflow, which helps prevent disease. Here’s a step-by-step guide to cutting back the dead canes on your rose bush.

Identifying and Removing Dead Canes

Inspect the Rose Bush: Begin by thoroughly examining your rose bush for any dead, diseased, or dying canes. These may appear blackened, brittle, or spotted.

Remove Dead Foliage: If you notice unsightly spotted leaves, likely caused by a wet winter, gently pull them down and back to remove them.

Cut Dead Canes: Look for canes that are black and dead. Cut them back to where you see healthy green growth. Use sharp pruning shears to make clean cuts, which will aid in faster healing.

Promoting Airflow

Identify Congested Areas: Inside the bush, remove any small, twiggy canes that are causing congestion. This helps improve airflow and reduces the risk of moisture and fungus development.

Shape the Bush: If you prefer a neat, vase shape, you can remove all but an outer circle of canes. This will create a more open center that promotes better air circulation.

Encouraging Outward Growth

Locate an Outward-Facing Bud Node: While it’s not essential, cutting back to an outward-facing bud node encourages the bush to grow outward rather than inward. This helps maintain a balanced shape and prevents overcrowding.

Make the Cut: When cutting back canes to maintain the desired size, find a swollen nub (bud eye) on the cane that is facing outward. Make a clean cut just above this bud node to encourage new growth in the right direction.

Final Touches

Clean Up: After pruning, collect and dispose of all removed canes and foliage to prevent any potential spread of disease.

We haven’t even mentioned the countless hours she has spent in her assigned rose garden bed making it beautiful all of these years.

Beth has been “the face of the garden” for many years. In many ways she has made it what it is today. Please help us in thanking Beth for the many years of service to the Richmond Rose Garden.

Roses are red…and a lot of other colors, too!

With over 1,100 rose plants, the Richmond Rose Garden is a haven for nearly the entire spectrum of rose flower shapes and colors, many being All-American Rose Selections (AARS). Our mission is to honor Richmond’s historic rose legacy with a beautiful environment for all to enjoy, and it is operated entirely by volunteers. It is 100% funded by grants and from contributions from donors like YOU! Will you help us?

Throughout the year, the Richmond Rose Garden hosts private events, such as weddings, graduation pictures, family reunions, and several public events. The annual 1stBloom&Glow in June brings the entire community together for an evening of food, fun, music, and glowing hot air balloons. We host an annual Rose Garden Photography Contest and display the winning photos in the garden in July. Other organizations, such as the Richmond Symphony Orchestra and A Better Way Services host events in the garden, too.

Please participate in the 2024 Rose Garden Annual Fund to assist us with accomplishing our objectives for the community. You may send your contribution before the end of the year to the Rose Garden Fund at 33 South 7th Street, Richmond, IN 47374 or donate online via our website: richmondrosegarden.com. You may also use the QR code below which will take you directly to our donation site.

Your support of the Richmond Rose Garden is greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

We would like to express our gratitude to the businesses and individuals below who sponsored the 2024 1st Bloom&Glow that was held on June 6, 2024. The event would not be possible without your support. Thank you for your unwavering support of the Richmond Rose Garden.

We would also like to thank the 400+ individuals who purchased a ticket to the dinner portion of the event. The Garden depends on this fundraiser, and we can’t thank the community enough for showing up year after year!
