For decades, the gazebo (donated to the Garden in 1987 by Dana Weigle) has served as one of the Richmond Rose Garden’s most recognizable and beloved landmarks. It has been the backdrop for countless photos, celebrations, concerts, weddings, and special memories.
As the structure continues to age, the Board of Directors has carefully evaluated its condition and determined that replacement is necessary to ensure the safety, functionality, and longevity of this iconic gathering space.
The Rose Garden is pleased to announce that the funds needed for the new gazebo have been generously donated by Monica Koechlein and Terri Batsel, whose love for the Rose Garden inspired their commitment to preserving this treasured community landmark.
“The rose garden held a special place in my mother’s heart–it was a place of beauty and it offered her joy and serenity,” Terri Batsel said. “She particularly favored the yellow roses as that was her favorite color. This gift – made by my sister-in-law Monica and I – will ensure others have that same opportunity to experience the peace and beauty that Jane Koechlein held so dear.”
Monica Koechlein shared her appreciation for the garden’s role in the community: “The Richmond Rose Garden is a special place that serves as a beautiful gateway and welcome to visitors entering Richmond and Wayne County from the east. For local residents, it provides a comfortable gathering space and an identifying asset that makes their home special. The garden also creates a place of belonging for the volunteers who invest countless hours all year long.”
To help explain the project and the vision behind it, lifetime board member and Richmond Rose Garden advocate Mike Devine has recorded a special video discussing the history of the gazebo and why replacement is such an important investment in the garden’s future.
The Board of Directors extends its sincere gratitude to Monica and Terri for their extraordinary generosity and commitment to preserving one of Richmond’s most beloved landmarks. Their gift will help ensure that the Rose Garden continues to serve as a place of beauty, gathering, and celebration for decades to come
We encourage everyone to learn more about the project and how it will help preserve the character and beauty of the garden while serving visitors for decades to come.
Additional information about the gazebo replacement project will be shared on our website and social media channels in the coming weeks.
